Centennial Coal has lodged an application for the expansion of their long wall mining activities from both Springvale and Angus Place collieries. After having damaged the water catchment of the southern branch of the Wolgan River they are now moving north and east under the still pristine Carne Creek area. Carne Creek joins the Wolgan at the resort and despite of what the miners want to tell us on their 536 page + Environmnetal Impact Statement. The undermining of the gorge will drain the aquifers and it is likely that the swamps dry out, the rock will crack and the aquivers will change for ever - the southern branch is clear evidence of that.

12/13 June was the Glow Worm Marathon at Newnes with 650+ registrations. It was a big weekend with runners and spectators enjoying a great weekend at Newnes. School holidays in July were quieter but it was a wonderful atmosphere. August is traditionally our quiet month, so if you like peace and quiet ... this is the time for you. The Wattle is coming on - Mid August should see the best of it.

We are sure you will enjoy the wonderful footage of the mining town, railway, school and the move of the pub together with interviews with former residents and the Friends of Newnes. The DVD brings the whole story of Newnes together in an hour of brilliant entertainment. It also forms a record of the rich history of this part of Australia.

The 'Oldies weekend held on 15th and 16th September, 2007 was a great event. About 25 former residents came to Newnes - for many of them the first meeting since the last Newnes Reunion in 1968. It was a very emotional experience to see these old folk, all in their 80s and 90s meeting their old friends from their school days at Newnes.

The Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa has opened. From all we see and hear it is indeed a very beautiful outcome of a very intense effort. Congratulations! We support this development even though we follow a very different approach at Newnes Hotel Cabins. We hope we can coexist in this fragile environment.
